Our Stories: Jelani McGregor–“I’ve never felt so lazy in my life!”

Jelani McGregor

Since I’m a student who lives in Illinois, time hasn’t changed for me. I still wake up and go to my e-classes like I would on campus. The expectations from teachers haven’t changed too much, and their expectations have gotten a little more lenient. The most my teachers want me to do is try my best.

My life has changed so much ever since the COVID-19 outbreak. I’m an athlete that’s dedicated to basketball. Being at home has made me feel like the biggest slouch. I do go outside everyday to try to get some sunlight, exercise, and excitement in my life. Other than that, I’ve never been so lazy in my life. About the virus, I feel like there are two groups of people–people that don’t care vs. people who care enough. The people who don’t care at all and think this whole thing isn’t a big deal…they are the reason we’re still on lockdown. In my opinion, people need to start taking this point in time more seriously. They won’t take it seriously until someone they know/love dies from it. There aren’t enough people who care enough to try to stay in their houses to let this thing pass. Enough ranting about the virus.

Staying at home has had a positive and negative effects on me. The positive is that I’ve learned a lot about myself and many strengths and weaknesses. I’ve learned how to motivate myself to do work, whether it’s class work or chores. I’ve also learned that I can’t cook to save my life. The negative part about being trapped inside of the house is that I’ve become very lazy. I like to sleep until about 1-2p.m on the weekends now that I have nothing to do. I’ve become a gamer while being in the house all day. Long, long days of Fortnite and Call of Duty have taken up much of my time. Other than gaming, I’ve found ways to entertain myself. One way is by taking long showers and singing in the shower. Believe it or not, it’s fun. Also, my friends have helped me through this period somewhat. FaceTiming my friends and just talking, playing iMessage games like UNO, or listening to music has been very enjoyable. That’s about all my life has been ever since quarantine. I’m really looking forward to going outside with friends and just normal life for the summer.

I play basketball. It’s my passion. When I heard that my AAU season was cancelled, I was so upset. I was really looking forward to playing with some old friends and getting better for my sophomore year. I still stay active by going outside and shooting on my hoop when it isn’t snowing or raining. The first thing I’ll do after this pandemic is go to my local gym. I can’t wait until the gyms reopen so that I can shoot without wind blowing my shot away. Quarantine is the worst.

Anyways, thanks for reading this. Hope you have a nice quarantine and summer!
