Rating of Local Haunted Houses and Pumpkin Patches

Bia Leffingwell, Staff Writer

There are so many fun fall activities to do this year safely and enjoyably. The two most common activities are going to haunted houses and pumpkin patches. Below is a list of several nearby locations, with a brief description of their features and an honest opinion of whether or not they’re worth it.

HAUNTED HOUSES:

Dungeon of Doom Haunted House (Zion)

This spooky haunted house is rated among the top fifteen in the nation by Popular Mechanics and top ten in the nation by USA Today. This is by far the scariest option to go to. Their costumes are very inventive and will surely get your heart rate high!

Evil Intentions Haunted House (Elgin)

The property is said to be haunted, with several paranormal activities thought to have taken place there. The haunted house was previously the Elgin Casket Company, giving it a heightened spook factor. I would highly recommend Evil Intentions if you want to have a good scare upon arrival. They are also taking precautionary measures for COVID-19 by requiring masks and proper social distancing from other guests.

13th Floor Haunted House (Chicago)

The legend behind this haunted house plays on the stigma associated with 13th floor superstitions. The company took over the building and claims that paranormal activity takes place there. 13th Floor is similar to the Evil Intentions Haunted House, but the public reviews are a bit lower.

PUMPKIN PATCHES:

Kroll’s Fall Harvest Farm (Waukegan)

Kroll’s Farm offers a corn maze, hay rides, a petting zoo, and pumpkins. Its website advertises  lots of seasonal activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Their ratings are high and the farm offers many activities.

Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard (Hampshire)

There are over 15 different attractions for people of all ages, including an apple orchard, a haunted house, a pumpkin patch, a straw maze, and even a giraffe barn! The location has made accommodations for COVID-19. The tickets are not too expensive, although the place seems catered towards children.

Sonny Acres Farm (West Chicago)

Sonny Acres is family-owned and has several different experiences for different ages. There are kids’ activities, a haunted trail for adults, hay rides and also a pumpkin patch for anyone to go see.

The Pumpkin Wagon (Elgin)

There are over 30 varieties of pumpkins, gourds, and squash offered at this family-owned farm. The location is cutely quaint, and pumpkins are the focus. It is a great place to visit!
